9 Ways to Save On Winter Bills

When cold weather arrives, the cash-strapped and the frugal-minded often think of the skyrocketing energy bills that can come with heating a home. Fortunately, there are many things you can do yourself, easily and inexpensively, to put a dent in that bill (plus a few others that you’ll need to hire a professional for, but that will pay off over time). In this article, we’ll share some ideas for winterizing your home, whether you rent or own.

3 Money-Saving Tips for Everyone

Even if you’re a renter and don’t have the liberty to make significant changes to your home, there are a few things you can do to decrease your winter energy bills.

1. Change your furnace filter. Over time, your furnace filter becomes clogged with dust and dirt. When this happens, your furnace becomes less efficient, demanding it to run longer to heat your house and increasing your energy bill. A basic furnace filter only costs a couple bucks and takes a few minutes to replace.

2. Caulk windows shut with removable caulk. If you’ve already caulked sufficiently around the edges of your windows and you can still feel air seeping in, try using removable caulk to seal your windows shut. When you want to open your windows again, you can easily peel it off. (Learn about a financial instrument that makes temperature a tradable commodity, see Introduction to Weather Derivatives.)

3. Replace incandescent and halogen light bulbs with compact fluorescents. According to the U.S. Government’s Energy Star website, 20% of a household’s energy bill comes from lighting, and a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) certified by Energy Star uses about 75% less energy than an incandescent bulb. For example, a 60-watt incandescent bulb is comparable to a 13-15 watt CFL. It’s recommended to use these bulbs in light fixtures that are used for at least fifteen minutes at a time. In winter, days are shorter and people tend to use their light fixtures more, so switching to CFL bulbs can help compensate for the increased energy usage and prevent a spike in your bill. (The average family spends $1,600/year on utility bills – find out how to put some of that back in your wallet, read Ten Ways to Save Energy and Money.)

6 Additional Money-Saving Tips for Homeowners

Because those who own a single-family residence have more control over altering their dwellings, they have additional options for decreasing winter energy bills.

1. Get a home energy audit. An energy audit will give you an idea of how you can improve your home’s energy efficiency and decrease your energy bills. While you can have a professional perform this service for you, the expense may not outweigh the savings. Luckily, some utility companies offer this service for free. If yours doesn’t, you can do an audit yourself using the Energy Star website’s Home Energy Yardstick, which compares your household’s energy use to similar households nationwide and recommends things you can do to improve your energy usage. You just need your last 12 months’ energy bills (if you don’t have them, you may be able to look them up online or order a record from your energy provider) and some basic information about your home. (Find out how to reduce your costs with these inexpensive tips, see 6 Ways To Save On Your Utility Bill.)

2. Add insulation to your attic. If the insulation in your attic doesn’t cover the floor joists, you probably need more to help prevent heat from escaping through your roof. You can add more of the same type of insulation you already have, or a different kind. Check the R-value, which measures the insulation’s performance, when deciding which product to buy. Also, if you’re handy, choose a product you can install yourself to avoid incurring installation costs. Just make sure to get some basic guidance from the home improvement store or a reliable book since some types of insulation need to be covered with drywall or another fireproof material.

3. Add weather-stripping. When added to windows and doors, weather-stripping can help keep out drafts so your house stays warmer and you don’t need to run your heater as much. Your local home improvement store probably sells a complete weather-stripping kit that contains everything you need to complete the job yourself.

4. Replace your old furnace with a new, energy-efficient one. If your furnace is over 10 years old and is not operating efficiently anymore, your monthly heating bills may be higher than necessary. Consider replacing it with a new, Energy Star certified model. The up-front cost can pay off over time through the decrease in your annual heating bills. Also, some utility companies offer rebates to help people purchase energy-efficient home upgrades.  Before making a purchase, see if your utility company will help defray the cost, and if so, make sure to buy a qualifying model. (Upgrading household appliances to more energy-efficient models can slash your utilities bill, read Home Energy Savings Add Up.)

5.Get a digital, programmable thermostat. This device can automatically reduce heat usage in your home during times when you don’t need it as much, such as when you are sleeping. You can set it to be at one temperature when you get out of bed in the morning, another an hour later when you leave and while you’re away all day, another when you come home and another when you go to bed and while you sleep all night. Of course, you can accomplish the same thing yourself by turning your furnace on and off, but if you’re the forgetful type, a digital, programmable model can save you money (for example, you won’t leave the furnace accidentally running all day while you’re at work).

6.Have ducts checked for leaks. If your home uses a forced air heating system, the air in your home is distributed through large tubes called ducts. If the ducts are poorly connected or insufficiently insulated, the air you’re paying to heat with your furnace can leak out – that’s money wasted. Having your ducts sealed can improve your home’s energy efficiency. In some cases you can do this job yourself, but in others (for example, if you have asbestos insulation, or if the ducts are located in areas you cannot easily access, like in walls or ceilings) you’ll be better off hiring a professional. (Don’t put the sale of your home at risk by committing one of these dirty deeds, learn more in 12 Worst First-Time Home seller Mistakes.)

Conclusion

Make sure to weigh the time and cost of making improvements against the potential savings, when making energy-related home improvements. Then, start with the areas that will give you the biggest savings and work your way down the list. (For more you might want to check out Save Money on Summer Bills.)

Home School Curriculum Kindergarten

home school curriculum kindergarten
In the state of Florida, how old does a child have to be before starting Kindergarten?

I am wanting to start home school Kindergarten with my now 4 year old son this Fall. The only problem is that his birthday is the 3rd week of October. Is there any kind of rules, laws, guidelines, etc. saying that I MUST wait till he is 5 to start school? Or can I start this fall even though his birthday is late? I plan to purchase my own curriculum to use for him also. Thanks in advance.

There is no reason that you can not start homeschooling your son now. The compulsory attendance laws state at what ages the child MUST be in school, but they certainly can be schooled before and/or after those ages. The only problem you might encounter would be if you try to enroll him in public school for first grade-they might want him to repeat Kindergarten.

As a homeschooling mom of two (and a baby who is not officially homeschooled yet), I recommend that you use very little in regards to a formal curriculum. Learning, especially at your son’s age, should be through life and having fun. One of the joys of homeschooling is that you can choose the method that works best for your child, and for MOST children that is not sitting at a desk and learning from an organized curriculum.

Perhaps you could join a homeschool group (you can do that now) and get feedback from them before purchasing anything. They will probably be happy to let you review the materials they use, so that you could see what it consists of and determine what would, and what would not, work for you and your child.

I really enjoyed Ready for Kindergarten. I got this from Amazon, and I believe the author was Susan Wilcox but I might be mistaken. The cover is a peach and lavendar check pattern. It has educational activities for several days of each week.

Story Stretchers is also available from Amazon, and gives suggestions for incorporating math, science, language, games, music, crafts and even snacks into popular children’s stories.

The What Your Kindergartener Needs to Know book was a good resource for us, and there are editions for Preschooler-Sixth Grader. These are published by the Core Knowledge Foundation and is available at your local book store and/or library. We also use the Preschool and K-8 Sequence published by this same company.

More than Magnets, More than Singing, More than Counting, etc. are other resources we got from Amazon.

The Teacher’s Calendar is a fun resource. It gives you the history of each date-significant events, famous birthdays and also tells what is being celebrated that day-peanuts, ice cream, etc.

Brain Quest is a fun game, with versions for toddlers-7th grade.

There are just so many resources available without a formal curriculum, and you might want/need that formality but it is not necessary-especially at such a tender age. Just make sure before you waste time and money and both you and your son get frustrated!

Other educational activities y ou could participate in:
trips to the children’s museum, aquarium, zoo, etc.
story time at your local book store and/or library

arts and crafts stores such as AC Moore and Michael’s have weekly crafts activitites/lessons

stores such as Home Depot and Lowe’s have weekly activities, such as learning to build a bird house.

Many community centers, such as the parks and recreation center, have educational classes and activities.

Animal Babies, Your Big Backyard and Ranger Rick are educational magazines published by the National Wildlife Federation. They are also available at your local book store.

Highlights is another good resource, and there is a version available for younger children.

National Geographic Kids is also great, and there is a version for little children as well.

Pack O Fun is one of our favorites! It has arts and crafts activities, usually centered around the season or holiday, but each issue also has a section that focuses on an area, such as Guatemala or Egypt, and gives a lesson in history and geography and has activites related to that country.

Do not forget websites. Starfall.com is a great one, Letteroftheweek.com. PBSKids.org, and even NickJr.com and Disney.

I hope this helps, and wish you and your son the best!

EDITED TO ADD:

I forgot! World Book Encyclopedia has a section at their website that is a good resource. Click on parents, then on Typical Course of Study.

Home Laser Hair Removal

home laser hair removal
Is it a good idea to buy a home laser hair removal product?

I wouldn’t do it because laser hair removal can cause a number of problems even when used by experienced, licensed professionals. The treated area can become red and swollen for up to 3 days after the procedure. If you are prone to scarring, it can even cause scarring in some cases. Especially darker skin may develop blisters and these blisters can get infected and leave scarring. The skin around the area treated may appear darker than the treated area that may last up to 4 months. There may be a change in the color of any beauty spots or moles on the treated area.

These are additional possible side effects:

These are all reasons to leave this to a licensed professional ONLY

Don’t Let Your Home-based Business Ruin Your Relationship!!!

All too often lately I am hearing of relationships failing because of the stress of having a home-based business. When you are running a business together from home you are together 24/7 and there are bound to be times when you just get on each others nerves. Add the stress of the business and wait for the explosion, it’s a time bomb waiting to happen. I start to envy people who go out to work in the morning and come home in the evening to relax and enjoy the few hours they have together. Can you remember the last time you just relaxed?

The problem is there isn’t any break from the business, work or each other. Every conversation seems to revolve around the business and usually all the things you didn’t get done instead of all the ones that did. Many people feel overwhelmed by the stress that a home-based business puts on a relationship. Many just give up and slam the door behind them. But if you’re not the type to give up quite so easily there are many little ways to improve your relationship while still running a successful business. Give some (or all) of these ideas a try:

1. Take time for yourself. An hour a day to be alone and think things through (without being told what to think!); take a walk, read a book, exercise (always the last on my list), whatever makes you feel relaxed. It will refresh your mind and soul giving you energy to climb the next mountain.

2. Take time for both of you. Dinner, a movie, dancing; preferably somewhere loud so you can’t talk about business! Get to know each other again, make a weekly date!

3. Make time for friends and family. There is nothing like seeing other people being mean to each other to make you realize how good you have it. Maybe this one is just me, but I have a big family who fights alot! I always come away from a visit thinking I am the luckiest person in the whole world!

4. Having a positive outlook makes the day go better.

5. Give credit when credit is due, not blame.

6. Never leave in the middle of a fight. Agree to disagree if all else fails.

7. Don’t dwell on the past and things you can’t change.

8. When you have a problem find a solution not fault.

9. Procrastination is our enemy, whatever the task just get it done.

10. Amazing how a hug and a kiss can make the day go better.

After 20 years of running a handmade jewelry business together our relationship is stronger than ever. We still argue and disagree often but we know we wouldn’t have it any other way. It took a while to realize that we couldn’t have done it without the other. Together we have had great success and the future looks even better. We wish you all great success in your home-based business — together.
